  1. Hi Charlie I have a son in ElReno and last year saw a tornado cross in front of him he is incarcerated in an camp there. They viewed it watching from the windows cant believe they didn’t call a safety drill. He also is a town driver and on the road a lot going down I 40 where so many Tornados pop up. I need to know what to do if in the vehicle and spot a tornado. ?

    • Cheryl,

Thanks for your question. Glad to read your son was o.k. after seeing the tornado. Here’s what’s recommended if you’re in a car:
      1. If you can, get out and seek shelter in a sturdy building away from windows in a small room such as a closet or bathroom toward the middle of the first floor.
      2. If no building is near, get away from the car and seek shelter in a ditch. Lie down and cover your head once there.
      3. If tornado is right on top of you and you can’t exit the car, make sure your seat belt is fastened, lean down in the seat with your hands covering your head. You need to be down so that your head is below window level in case the glass breaks out. Also, leave the car running so that the air bags will deploy if there is impact with large debris or if the car is lofted.

Hope you never need to do these action steps but it’s good to be prepared by knowing them, Thanks again for your question!

  2. Charlie, my husband and I attended the TornadoSafe program in Henderson, TN last year and I brought sign up sheets to talk with my neighbors about getting on the notification list. I have that ready but there are no instructions on the sheet as to where to send them! Can you help me? I don’t know if I take them to the Fire Dept, Sheriff’s Dept or if there is a storm watch agency in Henderson. Please advise. We do get the phone notifications when a storm warning is given, but I have no idea where to turn in my neighbors numbers. Thank you so much.

    • Bernice,

Thanks for your comment. I’m glad you were able to attend the TornadoSafe program there in Henderson! I very much enjoyed my visit… If you’re asking about the WEATHERCALL service, you can send those sign-up sheets directly to the company at:

      WeatherCall
      P.O. Box 472
      Parker, CO 80134

Thanks and let me know if you have any more questions!

    • Susan, It was great seeing you and Bill at the TornadoSafe presentation in Paris! It was a great night and I’m glad I got to see you there. Any program is made better by having family there!!! Thanks again…

  4. Hi, I live in a 2nd floor apartment (there are 3 floors total in the building). Directly below my apartment is my garage. During a tornado, is it safer to be in a center room in my apartment, even though it’s on the second floor? Or is it safer to go to my garage? It’s a single car garage and there is a small area on the side of the garage that is under the stairs leading to my apartment.
